Background: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by dry skin, pruritus, and recurrent flare-ups resulting from impaired skin barrier function. Healthcare workers are at risk of developing skin disorders due to frequent hand hygiene practices involving the use of hand sanitizers. Repeated, long-term use of hand sanitizers can compromise the skin barrier, thereby increasing the risk of atopic dermatitis. Meanwhile, research findings regarding the influence of different types of hand sanitizers on the incidence of atopic dermatitis remain inconsistent.
Purpose: To determine the association between the duration of hand sanitizer use, the type of hand sanitizer used, and the incidence of atopic dermatitis among healthcare workers.
Method: This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 82 healthcare workers at H. Abdul Moeloek Regional General Hospital in Bandar Lampung. Data were collected using questionnaires regarding the duration and type of hand sanitizer used, as well as a questionnaire for the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis (based on the UK Working Party Criteria). Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Chi-Square test and Fisher’s Exact Test, with a significance level of p < 0.05.
Results: The majority of respondents were female (76.5%), used alcohol-based hand sanitizers (85.3%), and did not have atopic dermatitis (76.5%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between the duration of hand sanitizer use and the incidence of atopic dermatitis (p = 0.020). Conversely, no significant association was found between the type of hand sanitizer used and the incidence of atopic dermatitis, based on Fisher’s Exact Test (p = 0.102).
Conclusion: There is a significant association between the duration of hand sanitizer use and the incidence of atopic dermatitis among healthcare workers. However, there is no significant association between the type of hand sanitizer used and the incidence of atopic dermatitis.
